“Mothering and Identity”
with Karen Gustafson, Associate Minister
Dates: Mondays, February 27, March 5, 12, and 19 Time: 7 to 9 p.m. Location: Gaebler Living Room Fee: $25 pledged/ $35 non-pledgedJoin us for a course that is for anyone who has been and/ or is a mother who struggles to reconcile the reality of mothering with the myth of the “good mother.” In Session 1 we will look at the myth in depth and discuss the ways in which it has affected our relationships with our mothers, living and dead, and/or our children. Sessions 2 and 3 will explore ways to focus and limit the myth as a way of allowing authentic relationships, acceptance, forgiveness and growth. Session 4 will focus on claiming and celebrating the ways in which our stories have emerged out of a new understanding of motherhood/childhood not as stages or roles but as ways of expressing our true humanity. (This course is appropriate for mothers, as well as mothers and daughters 16 and over, to take together. )
Karen Gustafson is in her fifth year as the Associate Minister of First Unitarian Society. Previously she served for 21 years as the Minister at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth, Minnesota. Karen is a mother of four adult children, a grandmother to two granddaughters and one grandson, and a daughter of a mother twenty years deceased. She has taught some version of this class over twenty times and has gained new insights about her unfolding maternal relationships every time.
