First Unitarian Society's
Cabaret 2010 Service Auction will be
on Friday evening, April 16.

Welcome to Appalachian spring

Sharing Simple Gifts in a Place Just right
Join us Friday evening, April 16, at the FUS Meeting House for our annual Cabaret auction
. Enjoy the simple pleasures and gifts that Cabaret offers as we transport you to an Appalachian spring.

Cabaret is a fun-filled auction that raises funds for programs and services at FUS. It’s also a terrific opportunity for FUS members and friends to get to know one another better and share their talents, skills, passions, hobbies, and hospitality. Each spring we donate goods and services and then have a great time bidding on each other’s donations. The range of items is astonishing. Past donations have included dinner parties, weekend getaways, chocolate for a year, homemade bread for a month, handcrafted bowls and other incredible artwork, a golf outing, a night of bad bowling, tickets to Badger games, help from master gardeners, sailing trips, guided hikes, massages, piano and harp recitals, martial arts lessons, and more.

Last year, Cabaret raised about $20,000.
We’d like to do even better this year!

When?
Friday, April 16, from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Where?
In our lovely FUS Atrium

How much?
$20 per person in advance ($25/person at the door). Admission includes non-alcoholic punch, delicious hors d’oeuvres and delightful desserts. A cash bar is also available.

What happens at Cabaret?
In keeping with our Appalachian Spring theme, the Cabaret team is planning a party that is both simple and lovely. Imagine wandering the Appalachian Trail to a lively fiddler's tune while eating scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Wet your whistle with complimentary punch and a cash bar. As you meander during the silent auction, you'll pause frequently to write generous bids for the articles, events, and services that your fellow FUSers have donated. Later, you can shout out your bids during a short live auction.

Winning bidders of articles take them home that night. A list of other winners will be posted online and at FUS a few days later. All winning bidders will be invoiced later.

Cabaret Entertainment

  • Snap your fingers and tap your toes while listening to live music associated with the Appalachian region—bluegrass, old-time, and folk. We always have a bit of floor space reserved for dancing.

Free Child Care Available Onsite

  • Free child care will be provided at FUS during Cabaret. If you are bringing children, please buy your tickets in advance (use the "Buy Tickets" tab above) and let us know your needs so we can plan for appropriate staffing.

What items will be auctioned this year?
Check the "catalog" tab on this page!

How can you help Cabaret be a success?

  • Donate an item for the auction. (see "Donate an Item" tab above)
  • Buy tickets and come to Cabaret. (see "Buy Tickets" tab above)
  • Volunteer to help the Cabaret team.
  • Persuade others to donate to and attend Cabaret.

I'd like to donate something but I'm not sure what to offer.
What should I do?

Check the "donate" tab on this page, fill out the contact information, and leave the rest blank. A Cabaret team member will contact you and help you brainstorm ideas for a donation. Don't be modest–we all have gifts to share that others will value!

What if I can’t afford admission costs?
Everyone is welcomed at Cabaret. The Cabaret team will give free admission to anyone who donates some time helping the team or donates an auction item.
Contact cabaret@fusmadison.org.

Do I need to pay for items at Cabaret?
Nope. We support a “party now, pay later” philosophy. Winning bidders will be invoiced after the auction.

What should I wear to Cabaret?
Wear whatever makes you feel good. Some folks enjoy having a chance to put on their "fancy duds." Others may go gung-ho for the Appalachian theme and get gussied up in their best calico prints. The rest will be somewhere in between.

Is Cabaret just for FUS members? just for couples?
Nope and nope. Cabaret is open to friends of FUS as well as members. Come by yourself or with others. Best yet, come as part of a very large party. The more the merrier!

Auction Donation Guidelines
Item Categories
Donations fall into three categories: articles, events, or services. In general, if people can take your item home, it's an article. The Cabaret team reserves the right to reclassify your item.

Quantity/Seating Capacity
Quantity is the number of items available for purchase. For example, if your donation is one set of three massages to be purchased by one person, the quantity is one, not three. For events, be sure to list the maximum number of people your event can accommodate.

Estimated Value
Your estimation gives bidders an idea on how much to bid. Consider the cost of materials, labor, etc. or the value the item might have in a fair market. If you donate an article, you will get a receipt for tax purposes showing the value you listed. If your item sells for more than you valued, that’s great but the value on the receipt remains as originally listed. FUS will not attempt to determine a value.

Minimum Bids (Optional)
If you set a minimum bid, someone must bid that amount or more to purchase the item. An item cannot be sold if a bidder does not meet this minimum. If you’re willing to allow your item to be sold regardless of the amount of the bid, do not set a minimum bid.

Title, Descriptions, and Photographs
Fun titles grab people's attention and exciting descriptions help elevate bids. If visuals help, e-mail picture files to cabaret@fusmadison.org.

If you have questions, e-mail cabaret@fusmadison.org or call Patricia Leonardi at 236-0496.

(A109) The Redesign of Tomorrowland by Bert
Science Fiction (or is it?):
The world of tomorrow exists today, but only for those who can spot the true experts. . . . And never before in human history has it been so crucial to spot these experts sooner rather than later. (A112) “Sundown (Silence of Mind)”
This is a two-color (red and black with white highlights) woodcut print from an edition of 10.
In a black ground setting amid a solemn red sunset, a solitary, exhausted farmer rests his arm on a post, after a long, hard day. His long, emaciated figure reveals the influence of famous American scene artist (and former US Senator) Thomas Hart Benton and perhaps cartoonist R. Crumb. However, Benton rarely if ever worked in wood block prints, lithography being his primary printmaking medium. He’s best known as a painter as the contemporary of Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry and the artistic mentor of Jackson Pollock. So “Sundown” is an utterly distinctive work that speaks to the plight of today’s small farmer. I previously donated one of the prints to a Public TV auction in Milwaukee and it sold after vigorous bidding. The large, framed and beige-matted print image is 17 1/2" by 11 3/8".
Though I’ve revived my output as an artist in the last few years, I’m better known as the former arts writer for The Capital Times (1989-2008).

(A115a–c) Lined Journals with Handcrafted Covers
If you’re fond of the color purple, you’ll love these books! The covers of these three lined journals are made with paste-paper, a technique developed by the Single Moravian Sisters of Herrnhut (Germany)in the mid 1600’s. The development of the Gutenberg Press in the mid-1400’s made it possible to print books with greater ease and efficiency. The sisters helped to support their community by selling their paste papers to publishers for covering books and pamphlets. Each cover represents a different method of decoration: combing, brushing, and stippling. Learn more about Lorna’s artwork at www.inward-bound.us.
Values for journals varies by size: $22, $18, $12 respectively.

Loose the weight you want to! Keep it off permanently! It is simple (but not easy) This method incorporates exercise with diet in a way that fits your food preferences and life style. (E324) Old Testament Wine
In May I will meet in Israel with the Old Testament scholar, James Kugel. I have many questions to ask him about his book, How To Read the Bible (http://www.jameskugel.com/). For example, what does it mean to be a monotheist or a Jew since he has demonstrated that many key events, such as the Exodus from Egypt, did not happen and that several editors assembled and re-wrote various chapters of the Old Testament? What does he worship when he goes to the Wailing Wall, a wall he has demonstrated was not the wall of Biblical times? Join me in a discussion of these and other issues as we share wine and a slide show of our trip to Israel. Date for gathering to be arranged.
Capacity: 20 people/ Valued at $20 per person
